چکیده

The largest single feature on a mammogram is the skin-air interface, or breast contour. Extraction of the breast contour is useful for a number of reasons. Foremost it allows the search for abnormalities to be limited to the region of the breast without undue influence from the background of the mammogram. Segmentation of the breast-region from the background is made difficult by the tapering nature of the breast, such that the breast contour lies in between the softtissue and the non-breast region. This paper explores the application of active contours to the problem of extracting the breast region in mammograms.

Contrast Enhancement of Mammograms for Rapid Detection of Microcalcification Clusters

Introduction Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among women.  Early detection of breast cancer is the key to reducing the associated mortality rate. The presence of microcalcifications clusters (MCCs) is one of the earliest signs of breast cancer. Due to poor imaging contrast of mammograms and noise contamination, radiologists may overlook some diagnostic signs, specially t...

Breast abnormalities segmentation using the wavelet transform coefficients aggregation

Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the world. The automatic detection of masses in digital mammograms is a challenging task and a major step in the development of breast cancer CAD systems. In this study, we introduce a new method for automatic detection of suspicious mass candidate (SMC) regions in a mammogram. Methods: Mammography is widely used for the early...

A Novel Approach towards Segmentation of Breast Tumors from Screening Mammograms for Efficient Decision Support System

This paper presents a novel approach to finding a priori interesting regions in mammograms. In order to delineate those regions of interest (ROI’s) in mammograms, which appear to be prominent, a topographic representation called the iso-level contour map consisting of iso-level contours at multiple intensity levels and region segmentation based-thresholding have been proposed. The simulation re...

A Hybrid 3D Colon Segmentation Method Using Modified Geometric Deformable Models

Introduction: Nowadays virtual colonoscopy has become a reliable and efficient method of detecting primary stages of colon cancer such as polyp detection. One of the most important and crucial stages of virtual colonoscopy is colon segmentation because an incorrect segmentation may lead to a misdiagnosis.  Materials and Methods: In this work, a hybrid method based on Geometric Deformable Models...

Dependence of Shape-Based Descriptors and Mass Segmentation Areas on Initial Contour Placement Using the Chan-Vese Method on Digital Mammograms

Variation in signal intensity within mass lesions and missing boundary information are intensity inhomogeneities inherent in digital mammograms. These inhomogeneities render the performance of a deformable contour susceptible to the location of its initial position and may lead to poor segmentation results for these images. We investigate the dependence of shape-based descriptors and mass segme...
